While no one has e-mailed me this question since starting BlogHelper, I think it is important to address this issue.  Most people see the most successful bloggers updating 2-4 times per day, and then believe that doing so is necessary.  The reality is, you should first determine *why* you are blogging.  For those that are just posting about their personal lives for family members and friends to read, post frequency is not that important.  This question is most important for those that are looking to earn income from their blogs, and increase readership.

For me, I think a new blogger that seeks to earn income from their blog should update at least twice per week.  If you can’t devote enough time to do so, I would wait until a later time to get started with a blog, or get a blog going, and focus on writing instead of optimization or monetization.  The most important factor is updating on a regular basis.  If you decide that you will update on Tuesdays and Fridays, do it.  If you decide that you’re going to update every day, do it.  That is, unless you have nothing to write about.

This is the part that most bloggers forget about, and as a result, it is why many blogs have some crap posted every now and again.  Even if you plan to update each and every day, if you have nothing useful to write about, or can’t post something your readers would be interested in, don’t post anything at all.  Remember, your most recent post is the one people see when they hit your blog’s main page (for most of us, anyway), and it is better to have a new user see a two day old post about something interesting than a piece of junk post that is posted today.

I have been guilty of posting just to post, but I have really worked hard to keep it to a minimum on my current blogs, and it has proven very effective in keeping new visitors from leaving, and never coming back.  Make every post worthwhile, and your readers will find the time to visit more often.
